The ASSURE Instrument Testing Program is an ongoing initiative of the Natural Diamond Council (formerly Diamond Producers Association). They used an independent 3rd party, Underwriters Laboratories (UL), to Impartially test and verify the effectiveness of all the CVD/HPHT detection devices that were submitted for a comprehensive review.

There are 3 types of lab-grown diamond detectors:
Type 1: Detectors that can check only one stone at a time (mounted or loose).
Type 2: Detectors that sort small (under 0.20 ct) round diamonds into 2 groups–natural and synthetic (primarily used gem labs).
Type 3: Detectors that can check single AND multiple stones (mounted or loose). AND multiple pieces of mounted jewelry.
UL results shown in the chart are the best test results for each device as it appears in the ASSURE DIRECTORY for a novice or expert.
